- General Motors acquired Rapid Motor in 1909, making it a subsidiary. By 1911, General Motors formed the General Motors Truck Company by folding Rapid Motor and another acquired manufacturer, Reliance Motor, into one. By 1912, the original Rapid and Reliance names were dropped, replaced with GMC.
